Laurence Equilbey is the conductor and musical director of accentus, and the Insula orchestra. Equilbey explores a vast vocal repertoire with accentus. She is the founder and artistic director of the Jeune Choeur de Paris, a department of the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris. She is also an associate artist of the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence, and has an ongoing relationship with the Philharmonie de Paris.

Equilbey studied music in Paris, Vienna and London, and conducting with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Eric Ericson, Denise Ham, Colin Metters and Jorma Panula. She has conducted ensembles such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestra Simfonică București, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Café Zimmermann, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, Camerata Salzburg, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and the Philharmonic orchestras of Brussels, Liège, Leipzig, Copenhagen and Frankfurt, among others.

In September 2018 she embarked on three years of Beethoven celebrations with the Insula orchestra to celebrate 250 years since the composer’s birth. She has recently led a multimedia performance of Haydn’s The Creation in association with Catalan theatre collective, La Fura dels Baus, which was performed at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, La Seine Musicale, the Theater an der Wien, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg and Lincoln Center.

Other productions include Lucio Silla at the Cité de la Musique, Paris and the Theater an der Wien, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice at the Royal Opera of Versailles and ballet works in collaboration with dancer Marie-Agnès Gillot of the Opéra de Paris. She also worked on the project Requiem (original fragments) with Yoann Bourgeois and Der Freischütz with company 14:20. At the Opéra Comique, Paris, she has conducted Albert Herring (2009) and Hahn’s Ciboulette (2013 and 2015).
