Born in Verona, Sonia Zaramella studied in Padua as an organist. She made her début as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro at the Savignano Teatro Lirico, going on to participate in the Nevers Festival, taking the rôle of Isabella in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri. At La Fenice in Venice she sang the rôle of St Augustine in Hasse’s oratorio La conversione di S. Agostino, and in the first modern performance of Piccinni’s La canterina took the title rôle at the Museo of the Milan Teatro alla Scala. Other appearances have included Cavalleria rusticana, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges and Wagner’s Rheingold and Götterdämmerung. She has appeared in theatres in Parma, Modena, Cremona, Brescia, Bergamo, Piacenza and Reggio Emilia, performing a varied repertoire, from Vivaldi to Stravinsky. Her recordings include Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and the first modern revival of Galuppi’s Il re alla caccia.
