Georg Tichy began his career as a singer in the Vienna Boys’ Choir. After completing his studies as a mechanical engineer, he returned to music as a vocal student at the Vienna Conservatory. This was followed by an engagement in 1973 at the Vienna State Opera. During the 1974–5 season he sang his first Silvio in I Pagliacci, and—after winning various international singing prizes—undertook the rôle of Papageno under Horst Stein in 1976. Since then he has sung major baritone rôles at home and abroad, ranging from Wolfram in Tannhäuser at Milan’s La Scala, to Rigoletto at the Florence Maggio Musicale, and Harlequin in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos at the Salzburg Festival. Georg Tichy enjoys a career also as a recitalist, with appearances at the Hohenems Schubertiade and recordings that include Schubert’s Schwanengesang.

For Naxos, Tichy’s voice has been recorded in Great Operatic Arias for Baritone that was released in April 2002.
