The bass Peter Kooij sang from the age of six in his father’s choir and as a treble made a number of recordings and broadcasts. He studied the violin at the Utrecht Conservatory and singing at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. His concert activities have taken him to the most important musical centres throughout the world and have brought collaboration with conductors including Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Frans Brüggen, Gustav Leonhardt, René Jacobs, Sigiswald Kuijken, Roger Norrington and Ivan Fisher. His repertoire includes all the vocal works of Bach, with music from Schütz to Webern, witnessed in more than a hundred recordings.
In 1999 he established the De Profundis Chamber Orchestra, and founded and directs the vocal ensemble Sette Voci for younger singers. Since 2002 he has been a member of the vocal quartet Tanto Canto. He has taught at the Sweelinck Conservatory and the Hanover Music and Theatre Hochschule, and since 2000 has served as guest lecturer at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music.
