The Royal Swedish Orchestra traces its origins from the Court Chapel of 1526 and is one of the worlds oldest orchestras. In 1773 Gustavus III transformed it into an opera orchestra as well. As the only professional orchestra in nineteenth-century Sweden it also regularly gave concerts with symphonic and vocal works. Since the beginning of the twentieth century the orchestra has grown from around sixty to a complement of some hundred members.
