Established with the Teatro Massimo in 1897, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Massimo is active both in operatic and symphonic repertoire, collaborating with distinguished conductors, including Leopoldo Mugnone and Gino Marinuzzi in the early years, Ottavio Ziino, Tullio Serafin, Antonino Votto, and then René Leibowitz, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Michel Plasson, James Conlon, Daniel Oren, Donato Renzetti, and Stefano Ranzani. More recently the Orchestra has undertaken international tours to Japan (2007) and to Finland (2009). The activities of the Orchestra have been paralleled by those of the Chorus and also, for some years, by a chorus of children selected from among pupils in schools of the city.
