Jonas Dominique is a Swedish conductor, arranger/composer and double bassist. He was educated at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm where he studied both instrument performance and conducting. Throughout 1988 he was assistant conductor for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted a range of modern compositions, including the premier of Sinfonia 8 by Daniel Börtz with Malmö Symphony Orchestra. In 1999, he was one of the conductors of the Stockholm-based performance of Kristina från Duvemåla. Jonas conducts regularly at Folkoperan, where he has also re-arranged the instrumentation of many operas, often with the goal to be as close to the original as possible. Some of the more creative arrangements that can be mentioned are, for example, Carmen by Bizet in Parkteatern in an arrangement for nine musicians, and at Folkoperan, arranged for ten musicians, both of which with a flavor of tango, Klezmer and czardas, including unusual instruments for opera such as bandoneon and cimbalom.
His compositions include a double bass concerto and a bassoon concerto, the operas M/S Aurora (Cantemus choir) and Silverskeppet (Vadstena Academy) where he used themes by Joseph Martin Kraus. Jonas plays double bass in various constellations, e.g. Argentinian Tango and the baroque ensemble Rebaroque.
In 2022, Jonas was awarded the illustrious annual scholarship from Musikföreningen i Stockholm with the following motivation: [Jonas is] a composer and true musician, who weaves together old and new music tradition in a unique and elegant way.
