A Spanish guitar virtuoso, Aguado wrote influential methods and studies for his instrument. He won a reputation for himself in Paris, where he settled in 1825, returning to Spain for the last ten years of his life. He collaborated with Fernando Sor in Paris, although his use of the right-hand fingernails differed from Sor’s practice.
