Sometimes known as the Austrian March King, and no relation to Richard Wagner, Josef Franz Wagner wrote some 400 compositions of which 250 were published. He was primarily known for his marches, the best known being Under the Double Eagle, also a favourite of John Philip Sousa. His other well-known piece is the Tyrolean Woodcutter March [Naxos 8.550900 Wedding Celebrations]. He became bandmaster to three successive Austrian regiments.
