The Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg was founded in 1887. The ensemble gives a hundred performances annually, also appearing as the opera orchestra.
Composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Reinhard Febel have written works for the orchestra, and it has played under leading conductors, including Adam Fischer and Donald Runnicles. Fabrice Bollon has been general music director since the 2008–09 season.
The orchestra has been nominated several times as the orchestra of the year in Opernwelt magazine and was awarded the German Music Publisher’s Prize in the 1998–99 and 2011–12 seasons.
